Leon Pillbox hat with cuff wool brown - black
Leon Pillbox Hat – A Historical Headpiece with Style
The Leon is a simple yet elegant cap with a turned-up brim and a comfortable cotton lining. It’s perfect for adding personal flair with feathers, pewter badges, or other decorative elements.
Originally known as the "Pannonian cap" in Roman times, the pillbox hat returned to fashion during the Middle Ages, especially among knightly orders like the Templars, Hospitallers, Teutonic Knights, and Lazarists. Eventually, it became popular in civilian life as well, especially in the 13th century for both men and women.
Women often wore it over veils or wimples, and sometimes even with crowns or circlets. Iconic representations of this hat style appear on the Naumburg Cathedral donor statues (ca. 1240) and in the Maciejowski Bible (folio 17 recto).
